Counting is the first step to number awareness. We start by memorizing the numbers 1-10 and repeat them verbally. More than just repeating numbers in a sequence, children have to understand that numbers have meaning. These number symbols represent groups of objects and have a chronological order. Finding the total of two or more objects. Here are a few strategies I have used within my classroom.
HandsFor small equations, using your hands is very effective.

Head and HandsPlace the large number in your head, show the smaller number on your hands. Use your hands to count up from the larger number. This is a great strategy to get your kids ready for mental math.
Number LineHundred's Chart![]() Circle the larger number on the hundreds chart. Then count forward the smaller number to find the sum.
Free 100's chart. Stack ItFor larger equations you can always stack the numbers on top of each other. Remember to always start adding in the one's column to the far right.
Try this online game. Stack BunchWhen adding more than one number, try bunching two numbers together to make the equation easier.
