First Grade Math Review

Counting is the first step to number awareness.  We start by memorizing the numbers 1-10 and repeat them verbally.  More than just repeating numbers in a sequence, children have to understand that numbers have meaning.  These number symbols represent groups of objects and have a chronological order.   Click any one of these free resources.

Finding the total of two or more objects.  Here are a few strategies I have used within my classroom.

Head and Hands

Picture
Place the large number in your head, show the smaller number on your hands.  Use your hands to count up from the larger number. This is a great strategy to get your kids ready for mental math.

Number Line

Picture
Use the number line to start from one number, counting up by the second number.
Free number line.

Hundred's Chart

Picture
Circle the larger number on the hundreds chart.  Then count forward the smaller number to find the sum.
Free 100's chart.

Stack It

Picture
For larger equations you can always stack the numbers on top of each other.  Remember to always start adding in the one's column to the far right.
Try this online game.

Stack Bunch

Picture
When adding more than one number, try bunching two numbers together to make the equation easier.
7 + 3 = 10, now 10 + 5 = 15.
