So many students, parents, teachers, pretty much anyone who is subjected to them, hate assessment. So why do we assess? That short answer is to see what is being learned and what is not. The problem comes from how we assess and what we do after the assessment. In a lot of cases, the assessment does not fit the learning or the learner. With the millions of way to check understand, my view is that we can get a little more creative than the stereotypical paper pencil. How about learning styles? Should all assessment look the same? Does every learner learn the same?
The true power of assessment is what happens with the information we collect. Are you a check and keep going type? Stop and master rebel? I see you defying the curriculum timeline. In what way are you using this information to enhance your student growth?
